About the Gambia
Republic of The Gambia, commonly known as The Gambia, or Gambia is a country in West Africa. The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, bordered to the north, east, and south by Senegal, with a short coastline on the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The country is situated around the Gambia River, which flows through the country's centre and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is almost 10,500 kmē with an estimated population of 1,700,000. The local currency is the Dalasi.
Gambia is a third world country and although many of the Gambian people have very little money, they are very happy and friendly towards tourists, maybe because tourism is a large source of income for the country. Crime is very rare against tourists making the Gambia an excellent holiday destiation.
The climate is a sub-tropical climate with two variations of distinct dry and rainy seasons. The dry season generally starts in October and ends around mid-June each year. The best time of the year to go on holiday to Gambia is between early November to early April. Gambia time is GMT which means no jetlag for UK travellers and is roughly a 6 hour flight from England.
